Learning to Support the Mitochondria Intentionally

Mitochondria

Mito–what?

The conversation around this vital and intensely delicate part of our body has been wide and varied. We have seen people break down the most intricate details and explain all the ins and outs of its function within the body’s cells. There are scientists who can bring you through the makeup of the Mitochondria and leave your brain exploding with content but lost on application. We want to attempt to bring clarity and application to this important piece of our overall health.

But how does the Mitochondria impact your everyday life? In every single way.

How is this relevant to the function of your body or your child’s body in real time?

Let’s break it down simply:

The Mitochondria is the energy source or the engine on the train that propels every cell in your body to do its job. Producing over 90% of the ATP in every cell is no small role. However, our Mitochondria is also responsible for other key processes including several forms of metabolism, immune responses, and even the maintenance of gut microbiome. Because it is involved in so much and yet is so very tiny and delicate one small break down or dysfunction can wreak havoc in our bodies. You might see low muscles mass, weak muscle strength, fatigue, poor exercise tolerance, fine/gross motor delays, hormone imbalances, and endocrine system dysfunction. You may also see oxidative stress that results in toxic overload and inflammation systemically causing a great burden on the body as a whole.

Consider Mitochondrial Dysfunction if you have these underlying conditions:

  • Various Mental Health Illnesses
  • Depression
  • Alzheimers
  • Parkinsons
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Autism
  • Rhett Syndrome
  • Epilepsy
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Metabolic dysfunction
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Neuroinflammation

What does this mean in application? How do we know how to support and help the Mitochondria perform better? There is so much research giving insight into using various agents that support the roles of the Mitochondria including electron transport enhancers, energy buffers, antioxidants, amino acids all leading to a higher function of the Mitochondria*.

Let’s break these down to see what each is going to address in the function of our Mitochondria:

  1. Energy to jump-start the healing process comes from: Carnitine, CoQ10, Creatine, and Malic Acid.
  2. Co-factors in the Krebs cycle feeding the electron transport and ATP Production: B Vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5< and Biotin).
  3. Antioxidants helping to prevent uncoupling of the mitochondria: Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin E, and CoQ10.
  4. Detox support, increasing the production of glutathione: N-Acetyl Cysteine
  5. Membrane Support: Phosphatidyl Serine

With this in mind, we want to be intentional about introducing these vitamins into the fragile systems of people with an underlying dysfunction in their mitochondria. Being aware, that this is not the only factor, we want to be sensitive to the quality and quantity of each nutrient that we are introducing into our bodies. We also have to be careful to watch how our body is responding as changes are taking place. As the body adjusts to the new therapeutic support we can see positive motion towards Mitochondria health. However, chronically ill patients can experience negative feedback as the body is adjusting and restoring the correct Mitochondrial support.

How can we be intentional?

Find a safe, high-quality product that is going to support the Mitochondria effectively without overloading the system. You want to look for a few key things in a product:

1. Safe dosing of ingredients so as to slowly introduce these agents and then build up as the body responds.

2. A formula without Folates and B12 as these B vitamins need to be individualized to each patient’s unique metabolic needs.

3. A product with ingredients that can be built upon and added to as you learn to support the overall health of the body and see positive responses.

4. A product free of unnecessary additives such as artificial colors, artificial flavors, milk or milk derivatives or sodium.

You do not want a one-size-fits-all product or a magic bullet product. We are all made uniquely and individually and when we are addressing something as intricate and individualized as the Mitochondria, we want to be gentle, intentional, and wise. A great starter product that has pure ingredients, appropriate starter doses of each ingredient, and is formulated with the intention of being built upon, is MitoRescue from True Health Naturals. Starting this product in individuals needing Mitochondrial support is a great place to begin supporting the Mitochondria. Consulting a Medical Professional for any treatment or therapy changes is recommended.
